Lamplit and intimate
A members’ lounge for a boutique hotel, lit almost entirely by lamplight. Teal velvet armchairs sit against ink-blue panelling, with aged brass picking up the glow.
The room is lit almost entirely by lamplight. Teal velvet armchairs sit against ink-blue panelling, and aged brass picks up the glow from every table.
Seating is arranged in close groups of two and four, with small tables and no overhead lighting, so conversation stays low. Every fabric was tested under the evening lamps before it was ordered.

01
The brief
The idea behind the space.
The hotel wanted a room people would stay in after dinner. We planned it for conversation at low volume: small tables, close groupings of two and four, and no overhead lighting at all.
02
Design and build
How it was made.
Thirty-two lamps were specified one by one and wired to three scenes for afternoon, evening and late night. The panelling and bar were built off site and installed in nine days to keep the hotel open.

03
The result
The finished space.
The lounge feels full with ten guests and comfortable with forty. Sound stays within each group of chairs, and the bar is visible from every seat without dominating the room.
04
Impact
Evening bar revenue rose in the first quarter after opening, and the lounge is now the space the hotel uses in its own photography.
