Stone and oak
An open kitchen planned for cooking and for company. A book-matched marble island wrapped in solid oak seats four and hides the working side from the living area.
The island is cut from one book-matched slab of marble and wrapped in solid oak. It seats four on the living side and hides the sink and hob from view on the other.
Matte graphite cabinetry runs to the ceiling with every appliance built in, so the back wall reads as one calm surface. A row of glass pendants marks the island at night without lighting the whole room.

01
The brief
The idea behind the space.
The family cooks every night and wanted guests close without having them underfoot. We turned the island to face the room, put the sink and hob behind it, and kept the back wall as plain as possible.
02
Design and build
How it was made.
The marble was chosen at the yard, slab by slab, and cut so the veining runs unbroken across the island. Graphite cabinetry, integrated appliances and a row of glass pendants were fitted around it.

03
The result
The finished space.
The stone does the talking and everything else stays quiet. There is a place for every appliance, and the worktops are clear enough to use from end to end.
04
Impact
The kitchen has become the main room of the house. Homework, dinner and late conversations all happen at the island, which was the point of the project.
